Welcome to Georgia Gems, a showcase site for the University of Georgia’s (UGA) Plant Selections and Patented Releases.

The plant varieties that you will find on these pages have been developed by researchers from the University of Georgia’s College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences (CAES).  CAES is one of the oldest and among the best colleges of agriculture in the United States, with world-renowned scientists that are dedicated to providing you with improved plant varieties.

The University of Georgia Research Foundation, Inc. (UGARF), via the UGA Office of Technology Commercialization, is responsible for obtaining intellectual property protection (patents, plant variety protection certificates, trademarks).  These plant varieties are then licensed to companies worldwide for production and marketing purposes.

Royalties received from sales are returned to UGARF and used in part to support plant cultivar development programs in UGA’s College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. This self-funding mechanism supports up to 35 breeding programs each year.
